Here a concept sketch inspired by the n2 mine shown in the Evangelion TV series. The images is part of a 3d camera mapping project.

the little project started as a normal 2d digital painting.
When I finished the painting I had the idea to transform the 2d image in a 3d environment.
The work flow was pretty easy.
I divide my 2d painting in several layers, every layer was intended to be projected to a specific 3d object in maya.
I created a basic geometry roughly describing the shape and the size of the elements visible in the 2d image.
It important to spend a bit of time thinking about the "real" size of the geometry that we need to create.
After that I used a basic surface shader in maya and a prospective projection to map all my 3d objects.
After that I created a new camera used as a render camera for the final output.
